green, 1 ball of white , 1 ball of black , 1 ball gold .

Note: a tight stitch will maintain shape better and not allow stuffing to show through. I stuff all my items
firmly unless otherwise mentioned .
I used alpaca fiber for stuffing this project. It is more compactable for keeping form but also heavier
than fiberfill. I have alpacas so this is an easy material for me to utilize but it could be done with other
forms of stuffing.
Simple instructions for the magic ring can be found o n OvertonFancies .com.
Assembly instruct ions can be found throughout the patte rn.

Assembly: Begin by attaching piece in place with pins. Position the legs beside the body slightly
overlapping the back curve. (The back of the body is the skinnier half.) When positioning allow the front
part of the upper leg to fold in on itself to create the natural curve of the leg. Using the long tail, do a
whip stitch around the opening leaving a hand -sized opening and then stuff , sew remainder. Use the
tails from the toes to stitch together the little gaps between the toes that show the stuffing, work in
your ends.

Assembly: Sew the eyes into the sockets. I have mine pointing slightly toward the front and
slightly down. This can make a big difference in t he attitude of the dragon so be sure you like
your positioning before stitching them in. Now connect the face to the head going about 1-2
inches past the largest portion of the head. The eyes on the inside should bump into the head
but not be pushed by it. The head has bumps on it from decreasing stitches, place one at the
top center, this will line up the others at the cheek bones and jaw line. Begin to stitch around
the face onto the head, stuffing as you go. Be careful as you stuff around the eyes so you don’t
cause them to point in a funky angle. Now you can attach the head to the neck being careful of
the angle to make it appear as though his head is resting on his arm.

Instructions: the rest of these rows are done in the leftover loops
from the previous rows, work continuously from one row to the next
eventually creating a back and forth design with “feathers” in every
other row. For the feathers do the abc… steps all in the same row
and then do ss down one side (always go down the same side of
piece to make a continuous zig -zag. [depending on how many rows
there are in the feathers this could be either on your right or left.] )
to get back to the bottom for starting the next row. (This is kind of
similar to the way we worked the back stripe. This allows lots of little details without all the

Prep: 6ch

1. Row: Starting in second ch from hook: 1ss, 1sc, 1hdc, 1sc, 1ss

Assembly: Stitch into place at the corners of the muzzle forming a “U” .

LIPS: LIGHT GREEN , DOUBLE YARN
For the foundation single crochet there is a good tutorial at:
https://www.craftsy.com/blog/2015/05/foundation -single -
crochet -how -to/
Here are the basics: Begin with a slip knot on your hook. Ch 2.
Insert hook into first chain. Yarn over, pull through one loop. Now
there are two loops on the hook. Yarn over, go through one loop
again (this is the ch). Place a stitch marker here. Yarn over, go
through both loops to make a single crochet. There is one loop left
on the hook. (This makes the first fsc but any others will follow the
directions below.)
*Go back to your stitch marker. Insert crochet hook into the space between the chain and the single
crochet. Yarn over, go through one loop; yarn over, go through one more; yarn over , place st itch
marker, go through both loops. Repeat from*
Now you should have three FSCs.
1. 3 fsc, 24sc directly on muzzle starting in 4th mouth stitch, 3 fsc.
Using long tails stitch edges of mouth to face in the semblance of a small smile.

it to the end. Flatten the end of (a) and (b) togethe r and stitch through all four layers. Wait to tuck in
tails until after you get a ll wing fingers attached .

Assembly: At this point you can stitch some leaf lines into the skin. It is optional but I really like the
result. I used 1 strand of dark green yarn and stitched down the “cente r” I then worked my way up in
the same areas going off occasionally and coming back up the same stitches to make the branching
lines. You could use individual double yarns for this but I was trying to avoid too many tails to tuck in. I
tried to make the se cond one a mirror image. You can then pin it and stitch it to the wing skin location
closest to the body.

Assembly: Stitch leaf lines. Pin and stitch farthest from the body . Now attach wings to body just above
and back from shoulder. Be sure to stuff as you go making this really firm. Do a very sturdy stitching job.
I have found from past experience that the wings are the most moved part on the dragon if you are
giving it to a child. This increases the chances of yarn breakage down the road. These wings are d esigned
to open and close depending on the desired play or presentation .

BACK STRIPE: DOUBLE YARN, DARK GREEN, MEDIUM GREEN, LIGHT BROWN, BROWN

side of the center, be sure not to skip one when adding to
it, as each has a purpose.)

Instructions: Reverse sc (Also known as crab st. I nsert hook in stitch on right [instead of left like
normal] and sc .) Start on the left side of your rows in the leftover loops, sc in the st to your right
by inserting your hook in, yarn over, pull through the stitch all the way to the front, yarn over
and pull through both sets of strands on your hook like a normal sc. This is awkward at first but
becomes more nat ural as you go. It makes lovely bumps that will greatly add to our dragon’s
look. Reverse hdc or dc is the same except you do the hdc or dc in place of the sc.

opposite side leftover loops.
16. Using 2 light brown yarn: Reverse sc in leftover loops closest to the previous row. Fo. Repeat on
opposite side leftover loops.
17. Using 1 light brown yarn and 1 brown yarn: Reverse hdc in leftover loops closest to the previo us
row. Fo. Repeat on opposite side leftover loops.
18. Using 2 brown yarn: Reverse dc in leftover loops closest to the previous row. Fo. Repeat on
opposite side leftover loops.
19. Using 2 dark green yarn in leftover loops closest to previous row: (start on the thicker side which
will be on the head and work toward the tail side.) (4sc, 3dc in next, 4sc, skip 2) x 16, 4sc, 3dc in

closest to brown row. Reaching over the center start on the thicker side just like you did
previously.
21. Using 2 medium green in leftover loops closest to previous row: (start on the thicker side which
will be on the head and work toward the tail side.) (4sc, 3dc in next, 4sc, skip 2) x 17, 4sc, 3dc in

provides the mirror image.
26. Stuffing as you go. SC along both medium green strips together. At the beginning and end of the
strip and tops of the curves do 3sc in one st, fo

Assembly: Tuck all the tails in. You can tuck them into the bottom of the back stripe and then
you don’t have to worry about them peeking out since this will be against the back of the

dragon. Place starting between the eyes, use it to cover the top holes that are p eeking out from
your decreases of the face. The thicker end goes on the head. Make sure it is centered well all
the way down to the curve of the tail. Pin it in place. This is going to take an extremely long
piece of yarn to sew on. Measure it up and down the piece and then add another side worth
and maybe a little more to be sure you have enough. Double check that everything is centered
and then stitch it on using a whip stitch. Go between the horns and over the tops of the wings .

Now, this is optiona l, but I am a little picky about my stuffing showing through. I went back and
weaved some yarn through the areas it was showing, particularly on the face and the joints.
Before After

Whew! All done! Great job on a challenging project. I hope you enjoy it.
