Yes, I guess everyone did. It was a lot of fun and I took great pride in learning to

Have you ever been to an art gallery?
- There are several art galleries in the Old Quarter of Hanoi and I check them out from
time to time . Their collections of oil paintings and lacquer paintings look amazing
but a bit pricey for me. (*from time to time = occasionally, check ST out = visit )

Are there any paintings on the wall in your bedroom?

Do you think it’s important to study science?
- Definitely . S cience plays an essential role in our life. It has laid the foundation for
almost all inventions and discoveries of humankind. However, I believe there is no
need to force pe ople to study unless they are genuinely interested in it.

Is it the government’s responsibility to encourage science study?
- I would say that family, school and the government should all have a fair share of
responsibility in encouraging young people to s tudy this pivotal subject. A high -
quality free education system for all children would be a brilliant idea .

checked out the Museum of Vietnamese history and I really love them.

Have you ever watched movies related to history?

something to calculate , such as the number of hours to complete a task or the
amount of money to pay for a certain item.

Are you good at memorizing numbers?
- I suppose so. I can remember the birthdays as well as phone numbers of my beloved
family members and close frie nds. I do, however, have a hard time memorizing the
dates of historical events.

What is your favourite number?
- I love all prime numbers. They are so unique and charming. My lucky number is 5.
Itₖs also the birthdate of a person Ỽho means the world to me .

Are you good at numbers?
- I guess so. Back in the old school days , I was excellent at math and other subjects
that deal with numbers, figures, formulas and the like . Now when I go shopping, I
can easily figure out the total amount I have to pay without us ing a calculator.

Would you like to have a job dealing with numbers?
- Definitelἂ notₓ Iₖm qỰite an artistic and creatiỻe personₓ Working Ỽith data and
figures is simply not my thing .

15. Place & View
Does your hometown have beautiful views?
- Iₖm proỰd to saἂ yes. I was born and grew up in the countryside where we have
amazing sunrise and sunset almost all year round . I used to climb on the rooftop of
my house to enjoy a panoramic view over lush rice paddies, winding rivers and
quaint villages.

Do you like t o stay in places with beautiful views when you are traveling?
- Absolutely. View is one of the most significant criteria for me when booking a hotel
room. I love sitting in a spacious balcony overlooking magnificent surroundings .

Can you suggest why some peop le use their mobile phones to take pictures of

- I believe their primary purpose is to save those breath -taking sceneries in photos for
later viewing or posting on their social media. Also, some people are really into
photography and just want to test their skills.

16. Sweets – desserts – cakes
- Do you like desserts?
Absolutely yes. They all taste amazing and look so adorable . I especially love the
tiramisu cupcakes.

- Do you like eating cakes?
I used to crave for them when I was a kids. Now, I still love them but when I come
across a beaỰtifỰl cakeₐ I donₖt feel like eating it anymore . Maybe becaỰse itₖs so
pretty, like a piece of art.

- Have you ever made a cake?
Well, I have to admit bakery is not my thing ₓ Iₖỻe neỻer tried my hands at making
real cakes that require a range of complex utensils and ingredients . I do know how
to make banana pancake though.

- Do you like sweet food s?
Wellₐ Iₖm no longer a big fan of them. When I was little, I would throw a tantrum
whenever my mom refused to buy me an ice -cream or a flan cake. Now, I believe I
can live without them all. Perhaps , my appetite has changed a bit.

- Are there a lot of sweet foods in your country?
Oh yes . Actually, I think there are too much of them. Candies, biscuits, cakes, jams,
juices and sugary drinks can be found everywhere. I guess a lot of people have a
sweet tooth these days.

trendy: espres so, latte, cappuccino and macchiato. I suppose tea is for old people
only.

I think it depends on different areas. Coffee are widely -prefered in cities while tea is
the most common drink in ru ral areas.

- Do people in your country ever give tea as a gift?
Sure, tea is considered a symbol of a supportive and long -lasting relationship so it
makes a perfect gift on several occasions such as Lunar New Year or Mid -Autumn
Festival. No gift sets for these holidays are complete without a pack of tea.

- When people in your country entertain guests do they usually drink tea, or coffee?
Well I gue ss itₖs teaₓ JỰst like manἂ other Asian coỰntriesₐ Vietnam has a long

sign of warm hospitality .

while . Holidays are perfect time to recharge our body and mind, which is essential to
a healthy and fulfilling life.

Do you prefer to travel or stay at home during holidays? Why?
- Well, it depends on the duration of the holiday. If it is just one or two days, Iₖd prefer
to spend that precious time with my family at home . For longer holidays, however,

What do most people do during their holidays in your country?
- Well, some choose to stay home and do chores o r leisure activities like cooking,
cleaning , going shopping or having fun at amusement parks. Others take the
opportunities to travel with their beloved ones or on their own .

Where would you like to travel for a vacation?
- I enjoy going off the beaten tr ack to discover remote mountainous areas or little
known villages in the countryside. This allows me to stay away from all tourist traps
and truly get immersed into local culture. ₹đ ⇬n nh ững nơi it ngư ời đã t ừng đ ⇬n: go

Do you prefer to visit a city or a beach?

Iₖm cỰrrentlἂ liỻing in a metropolis so obviously I donₖt crave more city life.

Who do you often spend holiday with?

anymore.

How much traveling have you done?
- Iₖỻe done seỻeral road trips across Vietnam, from tribal highlands in the North to the

In which seasons do you prefer to travel?
- Generally, mild and dry weather is perfect for my travel style with a lot of walking
around. I usually go on holidays in autumn and early winter but it really depends on
the destination Iₖm heading to.

What is the best season to travel in your country?
- From my experience, the prime time to visit Vietnam is in autumn when the weather
is most favourable : it is sunny but not too hot or humid. Most importantly , these
months are not local holiday season , thus less crowded and cheaper .

Do you prefer long holidays or short holidays?
- Well, my life has been quite hectic lately so Iₖm constantlἂ craving for a long holiday
to travel far away. There are so many distant destinations on my bucket list and
short holidays just doesn’t make sense .

19. Sleep – routine
How many hours do you sleep every day (or, every night)?
- Around 6 hours per day I think . My work can be hectic sometimes and I might stay
up late on weekdays but I would sleep in during weekends to make up for that.
Do you think it's good to have a nap during the day?
- Definitely. Modern life is becoming increasingly stressful with a lot of screen time so
a quick nap is a great way to recharge our body and let our eyes relax for a short
while.
Did you sleep more in the past than you do now?
- I suppose so. I did sleep a lot when I was young. However when I got into university
and lived in a ca mpus, I used to stay up all night . I got rid of that all -nighter lifestyle
already but still struggle to get sufficient sleep each day.
Do you think old people need more sleep than young people?
- On the contrary I think. My mom usually goes to bed at the s ame time with me but
she can get up extremely early in the morning. Also, she tends to wake up in the
middle of the night more often than me. I believe our bodies naturally need less
sleep when we get old .
Have your sleeping habits changed since you were y ounger?
- Definitely. Several of my routines have changed when I grow older. I tend to stay up
late more often and Iₖm no longer able to get straight to sleep .

Do you think it's important to have enough sleep (each day/night)?
- Absolutely. Having enough slee p is crucial for our physical and mental health. And
itₖs not jỰst the qỰantitἂ bỰt also the qỰalitἂ that matters . I always feel chirpy and
energetic in the morning when I get sound sleep the night before .

Do you like working in the morning or at night?
- What an interesting question! It depends on the season really. I always have a hard
time getting up early in cold weather so I’d rather stay up late to get things done
during autumn and winter. In spring and summer, however, I tend to become more
of a morn ing person (= an early riser ).

20. Music
Do you like music?
- Oh yes. I consider myself a massive fan of it . Music is absolutely an extraordinary
mood booster . It can turn a bad day around for me. Sitting in a coffee shop and
listening to some melancholic mel odies makes a fantastic way to unwind/ chill out .

How often do you listen to music?
- Wellₐ Iₖm not sỰre Ỽhat ἂoỰ meant bἂ ₙlistenₚₓ MỰsic can be heard anἂỼhere noỼₐ
on the bus, in a café or on the streets. We passively listen to it all the time. I also

time to kill.

What kind of music do you like? Why?
- Iₖd saἂ old coỰntrἂ pop songs are mἂ all -time favourite. My work is quite hectic and
stressful so I tend to listen to relax ing and soothing melodies during my leisure time.
It helps calm my soul and refresh my mind .

Do you listen to other kinds of music?

rock music. I also love checking out so me catchy new hits on the Internet from time

during old school days are still on my current pla ylist s.

Do you think older and younger generations prefer different types of music?
- Absolutely. I believe each generation grows up with their own favourite genre . My
dad is allergic to K-pop songs while my younger sister is crazy about them. Likewise ,
we can’t stand his type of music. I find most songs he often sings to us so old -
fashioned.

21. Haircut
How often do you have your hair cut?
- Not so often I think. I usually visit hair salons twice a year. As a big fan of
minimalism , I prefer sticking to a simple and natural hairstyle that requires little
care.

When was the last time you had your hair cut?
- Let me seeₓ It Ỽas a coỰple of Ỽeeks agoₓ Mἂ hair greỼ too long and itₖs reallἂ not a
good idea to keep long hair in this steamy hot weather.

On what occasi ons do Vietnamese people usually have their hair cut?
- The way I see it, people always wish to get a brand new look for significant events
such as birthdays, weddings or Tet Holiday. Changing their hairstyle might be the
quickest way to that aim . Particul arly, some women consider having a haircut as the
best method to keep bad luck away, especially after a painful breakup or a misfortune.

Would you like to change your hair colour?
- Oh ἂesₓ Iₖỻe kept mἂ natỰral dark hair for too longₓ Itₖs time to kick the boredom and
make a change noỼₓ Iₖm thinking of getting mἂ hair dἂed in chestnỰt broỼn neἁt

22. Jeans
Do you like wearing jeans?
- Definitely, I feel super comfortable in them. Jeans offer a casual look , appropriate
for a number of occasions. They are a must -have item for those always on the go
like me.

Is there any jeans brand do you prefer?
- No. W hen it comes to fashion, brand doesn’t matter much to me. I just shop around
and pick up any high -quality piece that fits me.

Why are jeans so common/ popular?
- Well, jeans are considered a fashion staple because they always look chic season
after season . As a versatile item, jeans go well with everything , from T -shirt to

blouses and jackets. On top of that, there are various types of jeans to choose from:
croppe d jeans, ripped jeans, skinny jeans, flared jeans and so on . I adore them all.

Do you spend a lot of money on jeans?
- Not so much I think. I only buy high -quality pairs when they are on sales . Also, unlike
other fast – changing styles, denim is classic and timeless. I mean thereₖs no need to
pay a fortune to keep up with the trend of jeans.

23. Wild animals
Do you like animals?
- Yes, I adore them all . Without them , the world wouldn’t be so amazing and life
would be extremely boring. Actually, some animals such as dogs, cats and dolphins
are considered our best friends.

Do you know any wild animals? What is your favourite wild animal?
- Definitely. When I was little , I watched a lot of documentary films on wildlife . I
particularly love lions, tigers, leopards , e lephants and whales. They all look giant and
powerful.

Are there any wild animals in Vietnam that are not found in other country?
- Sure, Vietnam is home to some of the Ỽorldₖs rarest animalsₐ including the golden -
headed langur and the Saola, also known as Asiaₖs Ựnicornₓ

Do you think it’s important to protect wild animals? Why?
- Absolutely. T hey are an integral part of the ecosystem that makes the world diverse,
beautiful and worth -living . However, most of them are in danger of extinction and
we need to pr otect them for future generations.

Do you like to see animals in the nature or in zoos?
- Iₖd prefer to se e them in their natural habitat not in captivity . I can’t stand how they
suffer when being kept in poorly -maintained ἇoosₓ Iₖd rather Ỽatch them on TV than
go to the zoos .

24. Laugh
Do you like to laugh? Do you like to make your friends laugh?
- Well, yes. I am so lucky to inherit a good sense of humour from my dad. I dearly love
laỰghing and alỼaἂs trἂ to make mἂ friends laỰgh endlesslἂ tooₓ Wheneỻer Ỽeₖre

When was the last time you laughed?
- Just yesterday when I looked at my childhood photos in my family album. My weird
hairstyle back then looked so hilarious that I laughed at myself for half an hour. I
always try to find a reason to laugh every day. Keeping a positive attitude in life is
vital to me.

In what situations do people laugh?
- What an interesting qỰestion₅ I gỰess theἂ jỰst canₖt help burst out laughing when
they encounter a funny picture or action. Also, laughter is contagious and
spontaneous. Sometimes people laugh simply because they see or hear someone
else laughing.

Do you like to make people laugh?
- Absolutely. Life is stressful enough and there is no need to make it harder. ₙA laugh a
daἂ keeps doctors aỼaἂₚ you know . Laugh makes a wonderful mood booster so I
always try to make people around me smile ear to ear .

Do you like watching funny TV shows?
- Ohₐ ἂesₓ Iₖm a huge fan of comedies and several fasci nating quiz shows. It is easy to
find similar programs online now. Whenever I have time to kill or when I get upset
aboỰt lifeₐ I ỼoỰld go Ỽatch them and instantlἂ Iₖd feel life worth living again.

Do you think it’s important for friends to have the same sense of humour?
- Absolutely. Like -minded people find it easier to bond with each other. Also, it would
be extremely awkward if we tell a joke and none of our friends smile.

25. Exercise – health
- What do you do to stay healthy/ keep fit /?
Well, I try to wor k out consistently to keep my body fit (stay in shape) . Maintaining
a healthy diet is also a top priority for me. I cook my own meals as regularly as
possible and rarely eat junk food.

- Do you have any unhealthy habits?
I haỻe to admit Iₖm a workaholic . I stay up late quite often to get everything done as
planned . I know this sleeping habit is detrimental to mἂ health bỰt I jỰst coỰldnₖt get
rid of it.

26. Living area
Where are you living now ?
- Iₖm cỰrrentlἂ liỻing in a nice and qỰiet neighbourhood which is extremely rare in
Hanoiₖs doỼntoỼnₓ We haỻe a lakeₐ an open market and a tiny park in our
neighbourhood.

Do many people live in your neighbourhood?
- It is just a small community of around 50 families I think. Several houses have been
turned into shops and offices so there arenₖt manἂ people actually . The area is very
tranquil at night.

Are there many shops in your area?
- Oh yes, there are hundreds of places for me to shop, from shopping ma lls, open
market, mini -supermarkets, convenience stores, gift shops, flower shops, fashion
stores, hair salons to hi-tech gadget stores. All are within easy walking distance (=
are conveniently to reach) .

Do you have many friends there?/ Do you know many people living nearby?
- Iₖm a newcomer here but my neighbours are super friendly and helpful. They even
let Ựs park oỰr ỻehicles in front of their hoỰses Ỽhen Ỽe need toₓ Iₖỻe made qỰite a
lot of new friends who are shop owners, barbers, tailors and others.

How long have you been living there?
- I moved to this place aroỰnd K ἂears agoₓ Iₖm glad I didₓ Earlierₐ I liỻed in a filthy ,
bustling area packed with people and vehicles, which was truly a nightmare.

What changes would you like to see in this area?
- I hope there will be a playground for children to enjoy some fun time outdoors. Also,
it would be better if all locals became more aware of keeping public spaces tidy . I do
see people dumping rubbish on the streets from time to time .

Who do you live with?
- I share the house with my younger brother and sister. My parents are still living in
oỰr coỰntrἂside homeₓ Theἂ arenₖt used to city life.

What do you like about the area around where you live?
- I really like it here. The surroundings are so airy and plea sant thanks to the lake and
verdant trees aroỰnd itₓ Streets here arenₖt as narroỼ as in other places Iₖỻe liỻedₓ
People can park cars in front of their houses without blocking the traffic.

What do you dislike about this area?
- Nothing really. The surround ings, the neighbours, services and facilities, I love
everything about it.

Are you planning to move to another area to live?
- For noỼₐ I haỻe no intention to moỻe ἂetₓ Itₖs hard to find a place like this in Hanoiₓ
Also, moving house is extreme ly troubleso me and stressful you know.

What changes have you seen in this area since you have been living there?
- Well, I can see some significant improỻements in pỰblic facilities and peopleₖs
awareness of the environment. A low wall has been built around the lake t o prevent
rubbish from getting into the water. In addition, a small park and an outdoor fitness
zone have also been set up by the lake for people to keep fit. It is nice to see such
changes.

27. Patience
Are you a patient person?
- I gỰess soₓ I donₖt mind Ỽa iting in queue or being held up in traffic ₓ Alsoₐ Ỽhen Iₖm
determined to do something, I will stick through it till the end no matter how hard it
gets. (*UK: in queue / US : in line)

When are you impatient?
- I always feel uneasy , anxious or even annoyed when someone receives my emails
but fails to get back to me within a day. They should at least confirm of receiving my
messages.

Do you think you are more patient now than when you were younger?
- Sure, I used to lose my temper when being kept waiting even f or just 10 minutes
and I would try to rush things. Now, I have no problem waiting as long as I know I
donₖt Ỽait for nothing .

Do you think you will be more patient in the future?
- Probablἂₓ Iₖỻe learned to be patient Ỽith other people and I hope I Ỽill b e able to be
more patient with myself too. I need to stop pushing myself too hard. The older I
get, the better I understand that any worthwhile achievements take time.

Are you patient in your work or study?
- Well, yes. I n the pastₐ I coỰldnₖt sit at mἂ de sk studying for an hour straight but now I
can spend several hours in a row preparing a presentation or a report for a business

meetingₓ Deadline is one thing bỰt Ỽhatₖs more important is that mἂ abilitἂ to
concentrate also increases with age I think.

Can you explain why some people are not very patient?
- Well, some people are born impatient, as part of their character I believe. They
easily lose control or get stressed out when things are not going their way . Another
reason is that due to fast -paced moder n life, people want quick results and they just
canₖt Ỽaitₓ

Do you think people should be patient?
- Definitely, haste makes waste. A lack of patience would urge people to give up easily
and thỰs fail to achieỻe anἂthing significantₓ Itₖs important to take small steps and
make little progress over time . Perseverance really makes the difference .

How do you feel when other people are impatient?
- In the past, I would feel nervous and began to lose patience too. Now I tend to stay
calm and try to figure out why they become impatient so that I could help them if
necessary.

Would you say young people are more patient than older people?
- I donₖt think soₓ I belieỻe ἂoỰng people especiallἂ little children and teenagers are
less patient than older people. They ju st can’t stand the boredom of waiting while
adults are more experienced and know how life really works .

Can you give any examples of work that require patience?
- Well, anyone who wishes to succeed at work has to be patient. However, I believe
there are s everal kinds of jobs that require a high level of patience such as teaching
children with autism or dealing with customer complaints.

28. Weather
Does the weather affect your mood?
- I donₖt think soₓ Iₖm not sỰre Ỽhἂ people saἂ theἂ feel ₙ under the weather ₚ t o mean
theἂₖre ill or in low spirits . Some people tend to get grumpy whenever it rains but I
think itₖs best to keep a positive attitude in life.

not as scorching hot and steamy as summer. Most importantly, it is the season I was

What's the weather like in your city?
- Generallἂₐ itₖs qỰite pleasant all ἂear roỰnd in Hanoiₓ Extreme weather su ch as heat
waves and storms is very rare. We experience four distinctive seasons with a
considerable number of sunny days every year.

Are there four different seasons in your hometown/ city?
- Yes, spring is cool with frequent drizzle . Summer is hot and hu mid with occasional
downpours . Autumn is most pleasant but it is subject to storms. In winter, it is dry
and quite cold but we can still expect several sunny days in a row .

Would you move to another city because of the weather?
- No, I enjoy the diversity in Hanoiₖs cỰltỰre and climateₓ Some of mἂ friends moved to
Ho Chi Minh City because there is no chilly winter in the south but I ₖỻe never
intended to do so.

Do you do different things in different weather?
- Absolutely. W hen I go on a ỻacationₐ itₖs ỻerἂ i mportant to check the weather
forecast regularly and plan the trip programme accordingly . If itₖs rainingₐ Iₖll cut
down on outdoor activities.

Would you prefer to live in a place that has the same weather all year round, or a
place that has four seasons?
- I ỼoỰld go for the second option becaỰse I canₖt stand boredomₓ I loỻe the diỻersitἂ
and variety in nature that four seasons offer. For me, life is worth living only when
there is always something different to look forward to .

Does the weather in your country change often?
- We have rather stable weather during spring and winter but it might get a bit
unpredictable during rainy season. It can rain cats and dogs all of a sudden and after
a short downpour, the sun will come out again as nothing has happene d.

Do you like it when it's raining?
- I do love summer rain, I mean the downpours. They are short and refreshing.
However, when winter or spring comes, it might be drizzling all day long or even for
several days in a row , which I find a little bit inconve nient.

Do you feel the climate is changing?
- I am not so sure. It seems to me that winter is becoming shorter and not as cold as it
used to be. This is just my personal observation, however. (*This = thay th ⇬ c⇞ câu

weather doesn’t matter that much. (*those = people)

29. Friends
Do you have a lot of friends?
- I suppose so. I have thousands of friends on my social network but in real life, my
circle of friends is not so big, just some close friends and co -work ers .

What makes a good friend?

- I do. As a ligh t-hearted person, I am able to get along with people from all walks of
life . I always try to find the good things in others, support them and cheer them up
when they are having a tough time . (*others = other people)

Do you like to make new friends or kee p old friends?
- What an interesting question! Well, when it comes to true friends, I believe quality
matters more than qỰantitἂₓ Iₖd make it a priority to take a good care of what I have
rather than look for new relationships.

Do you have close friends who live far away?
- Yes, my best friend at university is living in Ho Chi Minh city now. She moved there
for work but we still manage to share everything in life thanks to social media and
chat apps.
Do you still stay in touch with friends from your childhood?
- Noₐ Iₖỻe lost touch Ỽith all mἂ childhood friendsₓ We haỻenₖt met or talked to each
other for ages .

Are your friends mostly your age or different ages?
- Wellₐ Iₖd saἂ I onlἂ hang out with people of the same age as me . I believe generation
gap is a signifi cant factor to consider when we make new friends.

Is it easy or dificult for you to make new friends?
- Wellₐ thatₖs a toỰgh qỰestionₓ Iₖỻe neỻer tried to make friends or seek friendship on
pỰrposeₓ I prefer to keep it natỰralₐ and this Ỽaἂ I think itₖs no t necessarily a struggle
to build a meaningful relationship.

Do you usually see your friends during the week or at weekends?
- At weekends definitely. Most of my friends are office workers just like me, so we are
all too busy for a get -together on weekdays .

The last time you saw your friends, what did you do together?
- Last week, I had a wonderful time hanging out with some colleagues from my
previous job ₓ We didnₖt do mỰch reallἂₐ jỰst meet Ựp in a coἇἂ coffee shop to catch
Ựp on each otherₖs neỼsₓ I haỻe n o idea Ỽhἂ time alỼaἂs flies so fast Ỽhen Iₖm Ỽith
them.

In what ways (why) are your friends important to you?
- Wellₐ theἂₖre jỰst like mἂ familἂₓ Theἂ proỻide an endless source of joy that brings so
much positivity into my lives. They are always there for me , listen to me, give me
advice and try to get me out of trouble ₓ Iₖm truly grateful to have them around .

30. Family & relatives
Do you have a large family or small family?
- Wellₐ itₖs qỰite big I thinkₓ There are ℰ people in mἂ familἂₐ mἂ parentsₐ K older
sisters, 3 younger sisters, 1 younger brother and me. My extended family is huge
too, upto several hundreds of people. I feel like I have uncles, aunts and cousins
throughout Vietnam.

Is your family important to you? (see part 3 topic family)

How much t ime do you manage to spend with members of your family?
- Well, despite my hectic workload, I always try to spend as much time with my family
as I could. I always go home for dinner and stay home for most weekends.

What sorts of things do you like to do to gether? (see part 3 topic family)

Do you often visit your relatives? (Why?)
- Well, I see my uncles and aunts every once in a while , mainly at the weekend. Most
of my relatives live in other distant provinces and given my busy schedule now, I find
it hard to call on them frequently.

What do you do when you visit them?
- Not much really. We usually cook, have a nice meal together and catch up on our
news or any special plans. Every time I visit them, I feel like coming back home.

When was the last time yo u visited them? What did you do?
- Last monthₐ I came oỻer mἂ Ựncleₖs hoỰse in Yen Bai proỻince for mἂ coỰsinₖs
wedding and stayed over 1 night. The following day, my cousins took me to the
terraced rice fields and showed me around . I truly had a great time there.

Do you prefer visiting your relatives or your friends?
- Well that’s a tough question . They are equally important in oỰr life and I donₖt think
deciding whom to visit is a matter of personal preference .

Do you take anything when you visit your re latives?
- Yes, my uncles and aunts always give me a lot of fruit and vegetables and other kinds
of local specialties ₓ I coỰldnₖt turn them down because they would be upset if I do
so.

31. Learning languages

Do you like learning languages? Why?
- Absolutely. T o me, a language is like a windows into another culture. I find it
fascinating to talk to people from other countries and discover their unique ways of
life. Every language is charming in its own way.

What languages do you speak?
- I can speak English and V ietnamese fluently and a bit of Spanish, just for basic
conversations really.

What are some difficulties in learning a new language?
- I suppose most people struggle with language learning because they lack a
motivational environment to practice their skill s. Also, languages are completely
different from each other in terms of pronunciation, word formation and grammar.
For example, people from America or Europe may have a hard time learning
character languages such as Chinese, Japanese or Korean.

What is th e best way for you to learn a new language?
- I believe hard work is the only way to acquire a new skill and learning a language is
no exception . I remember when I started learning English, I used to spend several
hours each day listening to native speakers and try to repeat after them. Practice
makes perfect I believe.

Do you want to learn another language in the future?
- Iₖỻe become increasinglἂ enthỰsiastic aboỰt Japan latelἂ and I’m thinking of learning
Japaneseₓ I knoỼ itₖs not going to be a walk in th e park as character languages seem
a lot more daunting than the Latin -based ones.

32. Social media/ social network

Do you use social media?
- Definitely. I have Facebook, Instagram and YouTube accounts. I use them mainly for
business.

Do you like Facebook?
- I used to love it, a fantastic way to stay connected to family and friends. Now, I have
mixed feelings aboỰt itₓ To some eἁtentₐ itₖs still ỰsefỰl bỰt sometimes I find it a bit
annoying as too many irrelevant advertisements are shown in my daily newsfeed.

How did you first find out about social media websites?
- I first learnt about Facebook through my friends. They uploaded some nice photos of
their recent trip and sent me a link to see. And I discovered YouTube when searching
for a video of my favourite song.

Is social media very popular in your country?
- Absolutely. Many people even got addicted to social network sites and apps,
especially Facebook. They mindlessly scroll through their newsfeed every few
minutes to see what their friends are doing or w hatₖs on trend , such a complete
waste of time.

Do you think social media will become more popular in the future?
- I doubt that. The rise of social media platforms in the past few years is incredible and
I think they are reaching their peaks. They might co ntinue to attract more users for a
short while but in the long terms, I believe people are leaving them for private
networks or real life interactions .

In the future, do you think you will use social media more than you do now, or less?
- Wellₐ I think Iₖl l Ựse them lessₓ Iₖm trἂing to cut down on my Facebook time and
spend more time with my family and friends in real life, which is obviously more
meaningful and healthier too.

33. Concentration

Is concentration important?
- Definitely, it helps boost producti vity & efficiency at work or study. When focusing
on Ỽhat Ỽeₖre doingₐ Ỽe can get more things done in less time and avoid making
errors.

Is it difficult for you to concentrate? (Why?)
- Yes, I get distracted easily. I find it hard to stay focused on the ta sks at hand . When I
get down to work, it always takes me up to 30 minutes or even an hour to truly get
in the zone. (*get down to ST = start to do ST / get in the zone = to concentrate on
ST)

What affects your ability to concentrate?
- Mainly external fact ors I think. In our hectic modern life, we are constanly exposed
to too much noise and too many distractions such as TV, smartphones, social media,
stuffs like that .

Do you prefer to study/ work in a quiet environment or in a place with some noise?
- I find it easier to concentrate in a quiet place or a place with some relaxing
instrumental music in the background. I can’t stand noisy places.

Do you (ever) do anything to help you concentrate?
- Wellₐ Ỽhen Iₖm working on an important project or have a hanging deadline to
meet, I usually block out all possible distractions, put my phone in silent mode and
stay away from it until I finish work.

Do you think people can do two things at the same time?
- I suppose so. Some people are excellent at multi -tasking . For e xample, a talented
singer can sing beautifully while playing a guitar. My colleague can handle a phone
conversation while typing a report on her laptop. I find them truly amazing.

34. Taking photos
Do you like taking photos?
- Definitelἂₓ Iₖm passionate aboỰt capturing spectacular sceneries or fantastic
moments in daily life and saving them on my phone so that I can view them later.

What kind of photos do you like to take? Sceneries or people? Why?
- I love taking pictures of natural landscape since they are st atic. I find them more
relaxing and easier to capture than people or activities. Also, it might not be a great
idea to take photos of someone without asking for their permission first and Iₖm too
shy for this.

Do you often take pictures by your mobile pho ne or a camera?
- Iₖm really into photography but high -quality professional cameras may cost an arm
and a leg . They also seem too complicated for me to handle and a bit inconvenient
to carry around ₓ AnἂỼaἂₐ Iₖm cỰrrentlἂ happἂ Ựsing mἂ smartphone to pursue this
hobby.

What do you usually do with pictures you’ve taken?
- Well, I just save them in my phone and laptop for later viewing or editing.
ParticỰlarlἂₐ Ỽhen Iₖm able to take an amazing shot , I always upload it on social
media right away to show off my p hotography skill .

35. Rubbish & recycling
* UK: rubbish, US: garbage/ trash
* Litter = rubbish on streets (UK) = trash (US) (US: garbage = waste from kitchens)

Do you think it's important to keep the city clean?
- Absolutely. A tidy and rubbish -free living e nỻironment is ỻital to peopleₖs healthₓ
Also, no visitors would return to a city or town with litter everywhere.
(rubbish – free: không có rác / be vital to ST = extremely important to ST)

What do you do when you see rubbish on the street?
- Well, if ther e is just a small amount, I will collect it and put it in the nearest bin. In
case of a huge pile or heavy old furniture, I have no choice but leave it to our street
cleaners.

Can you suggest why some people throw their litter on the ground?
- The way I se e it, there might be two main reasons for this: a lack of awareness and
ineffective law enforcement. Litterers believe that there is no consequence for doing
so and someone else will clean it up for them.

Do you think plastic bags are a serious environmen tal problem?
- Absolutely. Plastic waste is a major cause of land pollution, ocean pollution and fresh
water contamination. Additionally, a great number of animals have been killed after
swallowing plastic bags. It’s time for us to get rid of them altogeth er.

Do you ever recycle?
- Certainlἂₓ Iₖm highly concerned about current environment issues and always try my
best to reduce my carbon footprint . Obviously, recycling seems to be the easiest and
most effective way to do so.

What can be recycled?
- Well, almo st all kinds of things. Plastic items such as shopping bags and refillable
bottles can be recycled easily. Even old clothes and broken household appliances can
serỻe a nỰmber of other different pỰrposesₓ Theἂ shoỰldnₖt be thrown away .

Is it important to r ecycle?
- Definitely. Recycling leads to a reduction in the amount of waste disposed , thus
mitigating huma nsₖ impacts on the ecosystem. The world would be amazingly
beautiful if all people on earth followed a more sustainable lifestyle .

36. Borrowing / lendin g

Do you like to lend things to others?
- Yesₐ Iₖm happἂ to lend and share things bỰt onlἂ Ỽith those I can trỰstₓ Iₖỻe had some
painful experience with people borrowing my stuffs and returning them in an awful
condition or even worse, I can never get the m back .

Have you ever lent a book to others?
- Definitely. When I graduated from university, I had a ton of books on English learning
and I decided to lend or give most of them to my cousins.

Have you ever borrowed money from someone else?
- Sure. I started my first business 4 years ago and I ran out of money right at the end
of the first year due to poor investments. My sister had to lend me some until I saw
some profit.

Have you ever borrowed a book from others?
- I have. Once I liked a nov el so much but in Vietnam we could only find a Vietnamese
version. Luckily, my uncle managed to get an English copy of it during his trip in
Europe, so I asked him to borrow it for two weeks.

Would you lend money to someone else?
- Yes. I know how depress ing and desperate being broke is. For a small amount, I
would never think twice ₓ HoỼeỻerₐ I ỼoỰldnₖt lend a large sỰm of moneἂ to people I
canₖt trỰst or those Ỽho are not so close to me .

37. Perfume
Do you like perfume?
- To be honestₐ I donₖt care mỰch abo ut it. I love pure and fresh scents of natural
floỼers and some perfỰmes smell qỰite the sameₓ HoỼeỻerₐ I canₖt stand sỰper -
heavy fragrances that many people use.

Do you use perfume?
- I used to wear a light citrus -scented fragrance on special occasions bu t now I prefer
to keep it natural. Also, I have a rather sensitive nose so I always try to avoid artificial
smells at all cost .
(xài nư ớc hoa: wear perfume/ rather = quite / tránh làm gì: avoid doing ST)

Would you ever give perfume as a gift?
- No, I have nₖt and Ỽill notₓ It seems ỻerἂ riskἂ to giỻe perfỰme to someone Ựnless Ỽe
know their personality and personal taste perfectly well.

Are you willing to pay a lot of money for perfume?
- AbsolỰtelἂ notₓ I canₖt figure out why many people are willing to pay a fortune for a
tiny bottle of synthetic fragrances. It just doesn’t make sense to me.
(Không th ể hiểu n ổi: can’t figure out ST= ST not make sense to SO; tiêu xài xa hoa: pay a
fortune for ST)

38. Voice
Is your voice different from when you were young?
- Definitely. I find my voice now much softer and lower than it used to be. Actually, I
didnₖt n otice that at first but one of my high school friends told me so .

Is your voice similar to that of a family member?
- Yes, I guess I share the same voice with my mom. I love the way she speaks, so
gentle and calm.

Do you like listening to your voice in rec ordings?
- Absolutely. Several people said I sound like a broadcaster (an announcer) in
recordings. Yeah, my voice is quite different in recorded conversations ₯ itₖs
amazingly clear and sweet.
On what occasions is your voice not normal?
- Well, I tend to get a husky voice when I have a sore throat , which I find quite
interestingₓ Alsoₐ Ỽhen Iₖm too overwhelmed , frustrated or angry, my voice will
automatically change its pitch.

39. Walking
Do you like walking? / Do you walk a lot?
- Oh ἂesₓ Iₖm really fond of walki ng. I find it extremely relaxing to stroll around my
neighborhood every morning. Also, I tend to go out for a walk (take a walk)
whenever I get stressed or need to think something through .

Where do you usually go for a walk? (Lake/ park)
- There is a small lake just few steps from my house and I go briskwalking around it
every morning or late afternoon. I especially love going hiking in mountainous areas
to escape from city hustle and bustle .

Is there any change to the way you walk now and in the past (when you’re younger)?
- Well, when I was young, I would try to avoid walking or just ran for the sole purpose
of getting from place to place . Now, I enjoy walking slowly (meditation walking) and
taking the time to reflect on my life events.

Do people in your co untry walk a lot?
- Definitely not. It’s clear to see that most people in Vietnam are not fans of walking.
Pedestrian roads are limited and streets are always packed with motorcycles, taxies
and private cars.

Do you think they will walk more in the future?
- Well, I doubt that. Due to increasing level of air polution and fear of accidents, they
will probably continue to avoid going on foot . Unless the government takes bold
actions to encourage people to walk more, this trend cannot be reversed.

40. Teacher – school
- What makes a good teacher? / What types of teachers do you like best?
Wellₐ thatₖs a toỰgh qỰestion₅ I gỰess eỻerἂone has their oỼn image of an amaἇing
teacher. For me, excellent teachers must know how to inspire and transfer
enthusiasm in their class ₓ Theἂ donₖt stick to textbooks but teach by examples and
pass on their valuable experiences to students, not just theoretical knowledge.

- Who was your favourite teacher when you were young? Why?
Iₖd saἂ itₖs mἂ high school phἂsics teacherₓ He Ỽas sỰper s trict and soft at the same
time . With a great sense of humour , he was able to make rigid equations and
formulas more fascinating and easier to remember . We never wanted to skip any of
his classes.

- What is the difference between young teachers and old teac hers?
The way I see it, young teachers can easily get along with their students. Also, their
teaching methods might be more updated and relevant to students. Old teachers,
on the other hand, can be more experienced and capable of capturing stỰdentsₖ
attent ion. However, they may be too conservative to adopt modern teaching
techniques and equipment.

- Would you like to be a teacher? / Do you think you could be a teacher?
I donₖt think Iₖm sỰitableₓ Teaching is a toỰgh job and a multi - skilled vocation. In
orde r to perform well, educators must play the roles of a parent, mentor, leader,
facilitator, entertainer and administrator at the same time. Such work is too
demanding for me.

- Have you ever had bad teachers before?
Sure, I still remember how hard I struggl ed with geography at high school. Our
teacher was so stiff , forcing us to learn by heart all those boring pages in the
textbook. On top of that , she never smiled to us or made any effort to get us
engaged in her lessons. I dreaded of her classes.

41. Countr yside
Do you like the countryside?
- Absolutely. I always wish to stay as close to nature as possible and if all my work
could be done from home , I would immediately return to my home town and live
there forever. As a huge fan of gardening and a relaxing life style, I find myself
belong to rural areas, not the city.
Do you spend much time in the countryside?
- Yes, I spend most of my weekends traveling around the outskirts of Hanoi and to
distant provinces where modernisation has not yet taken place . These are p erfect
places to stay away from city hustle & bustle , get a lot of fresh air and recharge my
energy .
Do you consider living in the countryside in the future?
- Definitelἂₓ Iₖll move to the countryside when I get older, maybe 50 or so . I always
cherish my chi ldhood days, growing up in a laid -back village where life was worry -
free and full of joy.

42. Breaks
Do you like to take breaks?
- Definitelἂₓ I canₖt Ỽork for K or Å hoỰrs in a roỼ without taking a break. My job
involves a lot of screen time so it is crucial to stretch my body after sitting at my
desk for so long. A break is healthy for my eyes too as they can rest for a while.

Do you prefer a long break or several short breaks?
- I donₖt like freqỰentₐ short breaks as it’s hard for me to get back in the zone
(concentrate) after staying away from the task at hand ₓ Iₖd rather take a long break,
maybe 15 to 30 minutes, to have some coffee and do a bit of exercise, which I find
more productive and efficient.
X
