Раздел 2. Чтение

1. How dreaming helps
2. Why dreams can be scary
3. How we forget dreams
4. Not only for humans

5. When we don’t sleep
6. How we remember dreams
7. When we dream
8. What we feel dreaming

A. Even though our dreams may feel like they last for hours and hours, we hardly spend
more than two hours dreaming each night, which means a person spends a total of nearly
six years dreaming throughout a lifetime. In general there are four phases of the sle ep
cycle and all dreaming occurs practically at the final phase. Each of these sleep cycles
lasts approximately 60 to 90 minutes and may repeat several times throughout the night.
B. Anxiety is the most popular emotion experienced in dreams. Many people dream of
falling, which is often connected to something in our lives that is going in the wrong
direction. In addition, dreams of being chased are very common and are linked to
avoidance. Also people report dreams about their teeth falling out, which is related to the
words and communication we might have in real life.
C. Dreaming helps people make sense of the information and events that occur in their lives.
Dreams play an important role in processing and remembering information that we absorb
daily. Also, they h elp reduce stress and even solve problems. It’s very possible to work
through real - life problems while dreaming at night. In addition, dreams provide a lot of
important content and meaning that can be used to inspire and direct our lives during the
day.
D. Ne arly 5 to 10% of adults have nightmares. There are several reasons for it, for example
when people start taking certain medications or when they withdraw from drugs. Some
physical conditions, such as stress or illness, can also be a trigger. However, in so me cases
adults may have frequent nightmares that are unrelated to their everyday lives, which may
signify that they are more creative, sensitive, and emotional than the average person.
E. There is no person who does not have dreams, but not everybody recalls them. The most
vivid dreams happen during the Rapid Eye Movement sleep stage when the brain is
extremely active and the eyes move back and forth quickly underneath the eyelids.
Although dream recall varies from person to person, some people have little or no
recollection of the content, and around 90% of dreams are gone following t he first 10
minutes of waking up.

F. Scientists have found that animals also dream and their subconscious thoughts are
connected to real experiences. Animals’ dreams are complex, containing long sequences
of events. Animals’ brains share the same series of s leeping states as the brain of human
beings. Analyzing animals’ dreams and the content of their dreams may help scientists
treat memory disorders and develop new ways for people to learn and retain information
more effectively.
G. Only five minutes after the end of a dream and half of the content is likely to vanish from
our memories. It’s not that dreams aren’t important enough to keep in mind, but other
things tend to get in the way. Dream researcher L. Strumpell believes that dreams
disappear from our memor ies for a number of factors. For example, we may not recall
dream images that lack intensity, association or repetition, which are usually needed for
dream recall.

Your amazing brain
You carry around a three - pound mass of wrinkly material in your head that controls
every single thing you will ever do. From enabling you to think, learn, create, and feel
emotions to controlling every blink, breath, and heartbeat ? this fantastic control center is
your brain. It is a structure so amaz ing that in the foreword to Discovering the Brain , famous
scientist James Watson wrote, “The brain is the most complex thing we have yet discovered
in our universe. It contains hundreds of billions of cells interlinked through trillions of
connections. The brain confuses the mind.” Obviously to understand brain function, we need
to confront its complexity.
Imagine your kitten is on the kitchen counter. She’s about to step onto a stove. You
have only seconds to act. Accessing the signals coming from your eye s, your brain quickly
calculates when, where, and at what speed you will need to dive to intercept her. Then it
orders your muscles to do so. Your timing is perfect and she’s safe. No computer can come
close to your brain’s awesome ability to download, pro cess, and react to the flood of
information coming from your eyes, ears, and other sensory organs.
Your brain contains about 100 billion microscopic cells called neurons ? so many it
would take you over 3,000 years to count them all. Whenever you dream, la ugh, think, see,
or move, it’s because tiny chemical and electrical signals are racing between these neurons
along billions of tiny neuron highways. Believe it or not, the activity in your brain never
stops. Countless messages zip around inside it every se cond like a supercharged pinball
machine. Your neurons create and send more messages than all the phones in the entire
world. And while a single neuron generates only a tiny amount of electricity, all your
neurons together can generate enough electricity t o power a low - wattage bulb.
Neurons send information to your brain at more than 150 miles (241 kilometers) per
hour. For example, a bee lands on your bare foot. Sensory neurons in your skin relay this
information to your spinal cord and brain at a speed of more than 150 miles (241 kilometers)
per hour. Your brain then uses motor neurons to transmit the message back through your
spinal cord to your foot to shake the bee off quickly. Motor neurons can relay this
information at more than 200 miles(322 kilomete rs) per hour.
Riding a bike seems impossible at first. But soon you master it. How? As you practice,
your brain sends “bike riding” messages along certain pathways of neurons over and over,
forming new connections. In fact, the structure of your brain changes every time you learn,
as well as whenever you have a new thought or memory.

It is well known that any exercise that makes your heart beat faster, like running or
playing basketball, is great for your body and can even help improve your mood. But large -
scale efforts of scientists from a group of institutes from the National Institu tes of Health
have recently showed that for a period of time after you’ve exercised, your body produces
a chemical that makes your brain more receptive for gaining new knowledge. So if you’re
stuck on a homework problem, go out and play a game of soccer, t hen try the problem
again. You just might discover that you’re able to solve it.

Now we are ready to start.
Speaker A
I am not much of a cinema - goer, but I do enjoy a good film. I usually buy a film online and
watch it at home. I’ve got a wide screen TV and a projector. Sometimes, if I am in the mood,
I use it. You feel as if you were in the cinema, but I find it a bit cozier on my sofa. It’s also a
lot cheaper to watch films at home. If I invite some friends, they bring popcorn and drinks,
and then you really can’t tell the difference.
Speaker B
The cinema is my life. Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve wanted to become an actress. I would
watch all the new musicals and children’s films and dream of playing the leading parts. When
I was in my last year at scho ol, I took acting classes to prepare for the New York Theater and
Cinema Academy. After graduating, I auditioned at the Academy and got in! It was the
happiest moment of my life, even more so than getting an Oscar two weeks ago!
Speaker C
Books are much more fun than films. I know most film directors want to make a film out of
some classical book, but so often the film versions don’t turn out well…at least to my taste.
When you watch a film you are forced to believe what you see and when you read a b ook,
you can imagine the characters and have your own personal experience with the plot.
Watching a film just doesn’t trigger your imagination the way reading does.
Speaker D
I can’t remember the last time I was at the movies. I think it was the day I brok e my arm.
Crazy as it may be, I broke my arm going to see a new film. My girlfriend had asked me to

go to the cinema with her, so I bought the tickets for Friday night. We were meeting inside
the Star Cinema. It had been raining hard and the pavement was v ery wet. I was five minutes
late for my date, so I hurried up the stairs and slipped. The last thing I remembered was the
terrible pain in my arm.
Speaker E
I never miss a new film. I have a notification sent from the local cinema to inform me about
any ch ange in their shows. They change the schedule once every two weeks, so I go to the
cinema every other week. Our local cinema is rather small, so they show two or three films
at a time. Sometimes I watch a film every day for three days in a row to see all t hat’s new in
the market. It does get expensive sometimes, but it’s worth it, the way I see it.
Speaker F
The theatre has more of an appeal to me than the cinema. I would go to see a play more often
if they had more theatres around where I live. Local theat re companies have only two shows
a year and that doesn’t satisfy my appetite, so I travel to London to see different shows, may
be once a month or so. Seeing real three - dimensional people on stage is a lot more interesting
than watching them on the screen. I love watching actors’ facial expressions and the
interaction between them.
You have 15 seconds to complete the task. (Pause 15 seconds.)
Now you’ll hear the text again. (Repeat.)
This is the end of the task. You now have 15 seconds to check your answers .

Задание 2

Now we are ready to start
Jane: Hi, Mike. It’s so good to see you. I haven’t seen you since the prom.
Mike: On, hi, Jane. Yes, the prom was great, wasn’t it?
Jane: It certainly was. I have already watched the video of it a hundred times, I think.
But, where have you been? You disap peared right after the prom.
Mike: Well my parents went to Peru on a special expedition. You know, they are doctors
and they said they wanted to treat children in Peru during their summer vacation.
Jane: Was it a charity project?
Mike: Well, I’m not sure. They certainly didn’t get paid for the three weeks there, but
they knew that they just wanted to help. They thought it was a shame for people with
the medical skills and knowledge like theirs to have a beach holiday somewhere in
Spain.
Jane: Your parents a re very good people. You must be proud of them.
Mike: Oh I am, believe me.
Jane: But still I don’t understand why you joined them. It must have been very
dangerous there. You know what I mean — the tropical illnesses, wild animals,
poisonous plants.
Mike: Well I had to have a few shots — the ones which were absolutely necessary. Of
course, I knew a trip to Peru might turn out to be dangerous, but I wasn’t afraid. After
all, my parents are doctors. If anything had happened with me they would have cured
me. L uckily, all of us were fine, including me.
Jane: What did you do there? Did you help your parents all the time?
Mike: They worked very long hours there, but I couldn’t help much because I don’t
have any necessary skills. I now know exactly what I want to d o in my future life. I want
to be a doctor.
Jane: Look who’s talking. Your parents must have spent ages trying to talk you into
following in their footsteps.
Mike: Well, they finally succeeded, didn’t they? In Peru, I repaired orphanages and
played with th e kids there. I did some other odd jobs, but when I become a doctor, I’ll
be able to help much more.
Jane: I see you have very strong motivation now. What do your parents think about it?

Mike: They support me. I’ll join the Red Cross when I get my diploma.
Jane: You’ll have to study for several years before it can happen.
Mike: I know, but it’s my dream and it will eventually come true.
Jane: Okay, good luck then. Look, I’ve got to go. My mom is waiting for me. We’re
going to do some shopping.
Mike: See you later then.
Jane: See you.

Задани я 3 – 9

Now we are ready to start.
Presenter: Our program about extreme sports is on and today we’re going to learn about
scuba diving. Our expert is Barbara Green who owns a diving school.
Barbara: Hello everybody.
Presenter: Barbara, what’s the difference between diving and scuba diving?
Barbara: T he word scuba stands for a self - contained underwater breathing apparatus. That’s
the basic difference. Knowing how to scuba dive opens up an entire underwater world of
corral, fish and other creatures. You can even say hello to a shark! That’s a joke, thou gh.
Presenter: People say once you’ve tried scuba diving you’ll never forget it. Is that true?
Barbara: Imagine swimming in clear blue waters as you look at brightly colored fish and
striking shapes of coral organisms. The underwater world is quite, except the sound of your
breathing. Can you ever forget it? Would you like to go back and see it again?
Presenter: I guess that’s the answer to my question. I heard scuba diving needs a lot of…
stuff and can be expensive.
Barbara: Scuba diving requires several pieces of important equipment which can be
relatively expensive. Scuba - divers must wear a mask in order to see underwater. The mask
creates an air space that protects the eyes and nose. Divers wears scuba fins on their feet.
Without them it’s impossible to move easily and quickly through the water. Many divers also
wear a wet suit to stay warm underwater.
Presenter: Is scuba diving dangerous?
Barbara: Basically, no. But the ocean demands respect. Divers wear a BCD or buoyancy
control devise to control how much they float or sink. A pressure gage devise tells divers how
much air is left in the air tank. Or a dive computer can calculate how much air is left as well
as the diver’s depth and the length of time they can stay underwa ter. Scuba divers breathe
with the regulator which brings air to the mouth when they inhale. The regulator is attached
to an air tank that is placed on the diver’s back. There is also an extra regulator called an
octopus. It’s used in case of the emergency situations.
Presenter: I know decompression sickness is a great problem for divers.
Barbara: You are right. It is a major concern for divers. The deeper a diver goes, the more
pressure the surrounding water puts on the volume of the air inside his or her lungs. And the
deeper a dive the more nitrogen gas goes into the diver’s blood.
Presenter: Do you teach it in your school?
Вы услышите интервью. В заданиях 3 – 9 запишите в поле ответа цифру 1, 2 или 3 ,
соответствующую выбранному Вами варианту ответа. Вы услышите запись
дважды.

Barbara: Of course. To learn how to use all this equipment it helps to go to dive school.
Becoming a certified diver requires thee se ries of lessons. New divers must learn about the
physics and safety of diving. And practice the diving skills first in the closed water area and
then on actual beginner dives. Several organizations offer official diving certifications.
Presenter: Do people dive alone, apart from the instructor?
Barbara: Another important aspect to diving is having a buddy system. Having a diving
partner you can watch over one another and help if there is an accident.
Presenter: Any final comment from you?
Barbara: One impor tant diving rule is to never touch any of the sea life. This rule is to protect
both the diver and the underwater environment. For example, there is a reason fire coral
received its name – it causes a painful burning feeling if touched. A diver could also be cut
by touching a sharp piece of coral. It may seem hard like stone, but it’s actually a very fragile
organism. It can be damaged if divers touch or stand on it. To protect the beautiful coral reefs
divers must treat them with care. Sorry to say, touris ts often forget about that.
Presenter: Thank you.
