My School Friend Doll
by

YOU WILL NEED:
1. Hook: 2 mm (US B) or according to the yarn.
2. Cotton yarn in beige (body) about 28g, blue (dress and body) about 22g, white (dress and socks) about
16g, yellow (soles and backpack) about 22g, red (shoes, backpack and dress details) about 8g, brown
(hair and Teddy Bear) about 34g, just a bit of cream and black color (for Teddy Bear details) calling for 2
mm hook (US B) or according to the yarn.
In all my projects I use 100% mercerized cotton yarn Camilla Madame Tricote. [Weight: Fingering,
Yardage: 134 yards (123 meters), Unit weight: 50 grams (1.76 ounces)].
3. Tapestry needle (blunt needle with a large eye) to weave in ends and sew the single pieces of the My
School Friend Doll together.
4. Soft stuffing (like cotton wool, fiberfill, etc.).
5. Stitch marker (e.g. contrasting yarn) and scissors.
6. Two plastic eyes with security lock (9 mm) or larger if you use larger hook or thicker yarn. You can also
use two black beads or some black felt scraps.

You should crochet very tightly and stuff your toy very firmly. If the stitches stretch too much and
the fiberfill is clearly visible, you should choose a smaller hook.

My School Friend Doll measures approx. 9 inches (23 cm) when done with fingering weight yarn
and size B crochet hook (2 mm). Of course final toy measurements will change with yarn or hook
substitution. It works well in any type of yarn, e.g. with worsted weight yarn and hook F (3,75 mm) - doll is
approx. 13 inches tall (33 cm).
This pattern is worked in rounds in a continuous spiral of stitches except the backpack which is worked in
rows. Work rounds in both loops unless specified otherwise. Remember to stuff your doll firmly as you go
and shape as you stuff!

Now you have to connect two legs. You have to hold them side by side. Make sure legs both face the same
way. The round to join the legs should be started on doll’s front. Now sc together one st of 1st and 2nd leg at
a time to connect the two legs.
The first stitch used to join the rounds becomes the starting point of the round. The first sc will join both
legs together then sc 24 st around the 1st leg (total of 25 st on the first leg). Then start the 2nd leg by doing a
sc in the same st as the first sc from the 1st leg. Then sc 24 st around the 2nd leg (total of 25 st on the 2nd
leg). This makes the grand total of 50 sc across both legs (picture below) =1st round of the body.

Fill in some stuffing material into both legs. When the body is finished it is harder to stuff the legs firmly
because of the small opening at the end.

HAIR - brown yarn
TIP: make hair before you join the head to the body. It is easier to handle it.
Cut about 180 brown strands of yarn about 10 inches (25 cm) long or longer if you prefer longer hair for
your doll (or if you use larger hook or thicker yarn i.e. if you use worsted weight yarn and hook F (3,75 mm)
make the hair strands about 15 inches/ 38 cm). Just wrap the yarn around the book that is about 6-7" wide
(or wider if you would like longer hair) and then cut one end.

TIP: You can wrap and cut them in several batches.

BANGS
To make bangs use double stranded brown yarn and tapestry needle. Cut a manageable length - about
100 inches/ 2.5 metres. Make up long vertical backstitches. Each stitch start from the top of the head (2-3
backstitches outgoing from one stitch) and end in each one stitch in the first beige row (start after 4th beige
st from the right, for next 25 beige sts - use photos as a guide).
TIP: Hold yarns flat (press it to the head) with your finger when inserting needle in beige row. It prevents to
twist the yarns.

How to attach hair to the head:
Insert your crochet hook through one of the stitches along the brown border. Take two strands and hook
yarn with your crochet hook in the middle of the 10 inch (25 cm) strands and pull through. Now grab the
ends of the yarn and pull through the loop and tighten the knot.

HAIRSTYLE
Attach the hair with your crochet hook one by one, making one straight row along the bangs (from one side
of the head to another side). Use picture as a guide.

Then make one row of the hair along the bottom line of the scalp (in last brown row). And one row along the
both sides (also in last brown sts).

Next attach the hair across the head for side part hairstyle.
TIP: To make it straight you can make line using contrasting yarn.
Make two rows next to each other all along. Always insert your hook from the center to the outside. Thanks
to that you will get nice line. Use picture as a guide.

Make two pigtails on the top of the head. Once your doll is finished, trim the hair ends.

ASSEMBLING THE PIECES
1. Use standard whipstitch to join the head to the body (in the 8th white row). Add a bit more stuffing
to the neck before closing the seam.
2. Attach the arms symmetrically to either side of the body (in the 5th white row).
3. With tapestry needle and beige yarn (face color yarn) embroider the nose - in the 8th beige row
work 3 long stitches over the 2 (or 3 if you want wider nose for your doll) center stiches between
the eyes.
4. Add bows to pigtails.

ASSEMBLING THE PIECES
1. Use standard whipstitch to join the arms to the body.
2. Attach the ears symmetrically to either side of the head.
3. Sew mouth on the center of the face. With tapestry needle and black yarn embroider the nose (Tshape), eyes on either side of the mouth and belly button - use photo as a guide.
4. You can use french knot to make Teddy Bear eyes (see Special Techniques on page No. 20)

Special techniques:
1. Changing color:
1. Work to the point where there are two loops of the last stitch before the color change remaining on the hook.
2. Drop the old color, yarn over and complete the stitch with the new color.

2. Closing the hole of remaining stitches:
1. After your last st cut the yarn and draw the tail through the loop on your hook. The tail should be about 6 inches
(15 cm) long. Thread it onto a tapestry needle.
2. Then insert the needle under the front loops of remaining stitches (going from the center to the outside).
3. Pull the yarn tightly to close the hole.
4. Insert the needle through that small closed hole in the center and bring it out couple of rows away. Pull the yarn
tight once again to hide the bump.

3. French knot instruction:
1. Thread the tapestry needle with black yarn
2. Bring your needle up through the crochet body just exactly you’d like the french knot to go.
3. Wrap the thread around the needle two times close to the fabric. To achieve a neat knot keep a tight grip on the
thread as you wrap it.
4. Push the needle down through the fabric just next to where it came out, holding the thread tight. Pull the needle
through the knot to the back of the fabric. The knot will form on the front.

How to join new color and start working in joined rounds
1. Make a slip knot on your hook with new yarn
color and insert your hook under both loops
of the first stitch of new round.

2. Yarn over and draw a loop.

3. Yarn over and complete first sc stitch. Sc in
each stitch around.

4. Complete last st in the round and cut the
yarn leaving a 2" tail. Draw the tail through
both loops.

5. Insert your hook under both loops of the
second st (front to back)

6. Draw cut yarn end through the front

7. Insert your hook under the back loop (back
to front) of the last st...

8. ... and pull cut yarn end through the
back.

9. Pull the yarn end to make this loop the same
size as other stitches. Tie both ends
together. New round starts in this "fake"
stitch.
